Feature Request: Centerline Trace

Asked by DavidBrennan

There are many instances where you have a thin image which one wishes to be converted into a single line. Currently, however, all known Inkscape (and GIMP Path) techniques do not generate single lines, but rather looped Nodes around the line's perimeter. As an illustration of what I mean, please see this simple graphic.

This is probably most frequently a desired method when converting raster signatures into vectors. Very often (certainly for me) users prefer to have a single stroke going through the center, rather than two outlines all the way around.

It appears that there are at least two programs which currently have this capability: Autotrace and CorelDraw. This demonstrates the viability of the idea, and, superficially, it seems relatively primitive compared to some other features on Inkscape, and so I believe that it could be created.

This is a little thread at InkscapeForum.com discussing this:

Thanks to all the workers on Inkscape. I'm so grateful for all you do. God bless!
