How to crop the object AND keep the cropping object

Asked by Maciej Pilichowski

Here is a great tutorial how to crop the object:
http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/inkscape-faq-how-do-i-crop-in-inkscape/

In all examples you have the object you want the crop, and the object which is used as boundary for cropping. After cropping is done, the latter is removed, sonly croped object reamins.

Question is -- how to crop AND also keep the object which was used for cropping.

Let's say I have such object

__###___

_ denotes empty space

I add another object (just for cropping)

__##|#__|_

I crop. This is what I get currently

____#___

I would like to get this:

____|#__|_

Create a duplicate of the object just before cropping. Ctrl+D is a handy shortcut for this.
