Crop a complex imported image

Asked by April Valdez

I have a painting I worked on and photographed and imported to Inkscape, it has many little details and is complex in design, how can I crop the image so that I can discard the spaces that I don't want to use? Is there a way I can draw lines that will "cling" to the lines of my painting so that I can cut them out?

Open the image in GIMP, use Image → Automatic cropping, Cropping tool (if rectangular shape) or else you could add a mask either in GIMP or in Inkscape (usable only if you don't need precise mask).

How would I do a precise mask? And is GIMP another program or is it an extension of Inkscape? Thank you.

GIMP is totally different program, deals with raster graphics only, just google for it. So you would have to make a image with transparent areas in GIMP and use it in Inkscape, if you need to add some vector graphics or text and output to PDF. If all you need is an image, you may not need Inkscape at all.

Can you help with this problem?
