connecting non-endpoints

I will draw a closed object with the pen tool, then draw single segment lines to compartmentalize the closed object. I can't seem to get the nodes of the single segment lines to join with any of the nodes in the closed object.

They don't. Never will. I think what you really need is to turn on snapping to node.

Can you help with this problem?
