My designs won't stay on the page when I go to create another shape

I select the selection tool, go to the rectangle, draw it, choose the select tool and arrows come up around the drawn rectangle. Choose the select tool and choose another design to draw. I can not draw another shape and my rectangle disappears.

The opacity is probably set to 0%? Then you cannot even select the object later other than dragging a box around it.

Can you help with this problem?
