Hi Tanita

You can edit the transparency as well as the colours of the filling and the stroke via the dialog "Fill and stroke". You can open this window by using the keyboard combination SHIFT+CTRL+F (or alternatively via the "Object" > Fill and stroke").

In Bokmal: "Objekt" > "Fill og strok" (sorry for the diacrytics, I can not enter Norwegian symbols)
I see in the development version that transparency is not translated. It is named "Opacity" in the English interface and is the lowest thing you can edit in the "Fill og strok" dialog.
For help on how Inkscape works, I personally would first have a look on the tutorials that come along with Inkscape. See menu Help (Hjelp) > "Tutorials" (Laeretekster).
