Sorry for the idiot question, but I'm a new user. How do I email an SVG file without the recipient having Inkscape on their computer?

SVGs can be opened in most modern web browsers without additional plugins. Just go to "open file" in the web browser.

Also, you can save your SVG in another format using inkscape. Just go to "File->Save a Copy..." and select a different file type, like PDF.
