How does one remove the box from the center of the screen & what's its purpose?

Asked by steve allen

There's a box, a rectangle that appears in the center of the screen at startup and stays there. What's it for, and do I need it? It looks like a big book, as it has an extra line on the right side one might think to be a page. How do I get to a blank screen for my artwork? Does this square print with final artwork? Thanks for your help , Steve

The box is the page border. It is controlled from the File ... Document Properties menu, where you can set whether the page border is visible, whether it appears on top or bottom of the drawing, and whether it has a shadow. You can turn it off, but the page limits still apply. The page border is a useful reference for aligning objects, and it also tells you whether objects will fall on the paper when you print them with Inkscape. If you intend to print your creations, all objects should be scaled to fit within the page border. The page border doesn't print with the artwork. If you want to print a border, you'll have to draw it around your artwork in Inkscape.
