Failed to load the requested file F:\piciscan\php version\images\splurge.svg

Asked by Mark William Syred

Hi there. Inkscape 0.48 just failed to respond on my Windows Vista laptop. The message popped up, would I like to wait for the program to respond or close the program. I said that Windows should close the program. This it dutifully did.

However, after this, when I try to open the file, I get this message "Failed to load the requested file F:\piciscan\php version\images\splurge.svg" Thankfully, I saved just before Inkscape crashed, so if I ever get the file open again, I'll not have lost any work.

Inkscape crashed at the same moment as I saved whilst the Export Bitmap dialogue was open.

Is there any way of saving my file as I have a number of drawings in the file that I have yet to export and I have no copy of the work elsewhere?

I've managed to open the .svg file in a text editor, though this hasn't helped me much as I have no idea what would constitute an error. Would it be helpful to copy and paste the text of this here? It is rather big. The file itself is 18.6MB.

Please do not paste the text content of a 18.6 MB file here! You will need to find other services to upload and share the file/link here (the 'Answers' section of Launchpad doesn't allow attachments either).

The free image hosting service <http://imgh.us> does accept and serve SVG files, but I'm hesitating a bit to recommend it for such large files (the images uploaded there do not auto-expire like with other image pastebins: they can be managed (deleted, renamed) based on browser cookies - if you delete or deny cookies, it will be left behind…)

Maybe one of the usual file sharing services will do. For links, see e.g. this list:

or this topic in the InkscapeForum:

Okay. I have uploaded the .txt file to the server for the PiciScan website - the website I am attempting to edit with the contents of splurge.svg.

It is at http://piciscan.co.uk/images/splurge.txt

Any help that anyone can be with this would be most appreciated.

The file was truncated during save (there are parts missing at the end - I can't tell how many lines or SVG objects):

To "repair" the file to be able to open it (or what is left):
1) open in a plain-text editor
2) delete line 3546-3549
3) add these three lines instead, at the end:

</g>
</g>
</svg>

4) try to open it in Inkscape

(works for me with Inkcsape 0.48.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i386)

BTW - you seem to have missed the two bug-fix releases since the initial release of Inkscape 0.48? At least the file was last edited with:
   inkscape:version="0.48.0 r9654"
Current stable version is Inkscape 0.48.2.

In case editing such large text files doesn't work for you - I probably could attach a "fixed" version of the file (temporarily) to one of my bug reports in the inkscape bug tracker here at launchpad (for you to download). But basically, the edits are easy: delete the last four lines (an incomplete <image> element), and replace them with the three lines I mentioned in my previous comment (which properly close open tags in the SVG file).

I'm going to give what you suggest a try.

That last line goes on for a bit!

I'll let you know when I've done.

~suv Thank you very much for your help.

What you suggested solved the problem of being able to open the file. But, unfortunately, in crashing, Inkscape lost around half the original file contents.

How can I stop this happening again?

Have downloaded and installed the newer version 0.48.2
