curving text

I am a new user so please forgive my lack of ability... I am trying to place text on a simple curve. I think I am supposed to draw a circle or curve and then link the text to the curve/circle with the path feature. I have tried multiple orders, etc, but nothing happens.

Create a text, switch to the selector tool (F1), select the text box and click Path → Object to Path. Select at first the text, hold shift and select the curve, too. Go to Extensions → Generate from Path → Pattern along Path.
