Inkscape 1.48.1 will not open in Mac OSX 10.4.11

Asked by michelle scott

I also downloaded X11 user for Mac OSX. Both downloaded, but Inkscape will not open. All I get is a window with the Inkscape icon on the right, an application icon on the left, and an arrow in the middle . I dragged the icon into the application window...and nothing. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

1) Make sure that you have X11 from your original Mac OS X install disc installed (see below), and use 'Software Update' to ugrade X11 to the latest version (1.1.3) that Apple provides for Mac OS X 10.4.11.
2) To install Inkscape, double-click the installation package, drag the inkscape icon on the 'Applications' icon (as you described in your question). This will copy the Inkscape program into the folder 'Applications' on your hard disk. Now eject the installation package.
3) Open a new Finder window, and browse to the 'Applications' folder (usually, it is listed in the sidebar of each Finder window, under 'Places'): the Inkscape program icon is now listed there too. You can launch Inkscape by double-clicking it.

Note I: the latest Inkscape package (0.48) for Mac OS X Tiger only runs on PPC Macs. You need to figure out what type of processor your Mac has:
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1531>

If you have an Intel Mac, you have to use an older version:
download and install ''Inkscape-0.46-3.TIGER.UNIVERSAL.dmg' from
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.46/>

If you have a PPC mac:
download and install 'Inkscape-0.48.0-1-TIGER-PPC.dmg' from
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.48/>

Note II: To be able to run Inkscape, you need to have X11 installed:
You can install it from your original Install Disc 1. Scroll down the Finder window which opens when the DVD is inserted; double-click "Optional Installs"; go through the license agreement and destination selection; on the "Custom install" page select Applications -> X11 and deselect everything else; hit Install.
<http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1442>
After the installation has finished, use 'Software Update' to upgrade to the latest X11 version provided by Apple for Tiger (X11 1.1.3).
<http://support.apple.com/kb/DL304>

If you can't find your original X11 install discs anymore, you can download the X11 package from here: <http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=N;O=D> (choose the package matching the processor type of your Mac). Do not forget to run 'Software Update' after installing X11.

Note III: the initial run of Inkscape might take a while because it needs to build the font caches (it scans for fonts installed on your system and caches important information which will be used by Inkscape).
