want to add drop shadow to text

I add a drop shadow to the text when I group the drop shadow goes away. Do I need to add the text to a layer?

No - it is a known small glitch in the renderer which doesn't update the filter effect of text objects after grouping or ungrouping them.

Workaround:
After grouping, select the group and nudge it with the arrow keys one step up and back down. This will trigger an update of the group and its members and the filter effect (drop shadow, blur, etc.) will be restored.
