Gradient tool disappears

First of all thanks for the great tool that is inkscape, i've been using it for about 2 years now and pretty satisfied with it.

Lately an issue as been driving me crazy : when I try to edit a gradient (Fill - > Gradient -> Edit), it looks like the gradient dialog box is going to open but it never does so I can't access it.
At times, uninstalling and re-installing the software would bring my gradient tool box back but now it doesn't.

It probably seems like a dumb problem but please help me with this issue I'm really stuck here.

Do you know that you can edit gradients on canvas? With gradient tool active just click on a color stop, and you can change its color via Fill/Stroke dialog or from swatches or even using eye-dropper (D key toggles it). You can also add new color stops and drag them around. The gradient editing dialog is really fairly optional these days.

Do you change your monitor setup between different runs (switching between one or several screens)? Could it be possible that the dialog is opened, but displayed outside of your current screen?
