Can't get it to draw

Asked by Barbara Henley

I have read the manual, but when I try to pick a color for either stroke or fill it simply does not acknowledge the choice. I have tried both my mouse and my wacom neither one works. Also my screen does not look like the interface in the manual mine has a small portrait orientated rectangle in the middle of the interface. I can not draw on it nor can I find how to re-size it.
Bottom line is I can not get even one line to draw with this program.

I did finally get it to draw with the mouse, but not my drawing tablet. Nor does it behave like a regular drawing program. I find it a shame, it looked like it was going to be fun to draw with, but I can find no use for it other than doodling.

"Nor does it behave like a regular drawing program."

It's not a regular drawing program. Inkscape uses scalable vector graphics (SVG), not pixels, to make images, and it takes a bit of practice to get used to it, even if one has prior experience with vector-based CAD packages such as AutoCAD.

Wikipedia encourages the use of SVG files instead of GIF or PNG for all sorts of diagrams and logos. Some of the SVG images posted there are very elaborate doodling, indeed! Take a look at the Flag and Seal in the California article, for example.
