create a graphic outline quickly

Asked by Phyllis Wright

I am using Inkscape to convert graphics to an svg format for use on an electronic cutting machine. I need to reduce the number of nodes to an outline of the graphic. I have used the simplify node tool, but the number of internal nodes are still to many. Deleting individual nodes is time consuming. Can deletion of nodes to a basic outline be done in a fast, efficient way?

A trick I've used before is to use the paint fill to "fill" the shape. The level of detail in the fill shape depends on your settings and on the page zoom at the time - high zoom will make a fill that catches more detail IIRC. You're effectively making a less detailed version of the filled shape over the top, just delete the original shape underneath (or hide it on a sublayer, etc.) when you're happy with the result.

HTH.

Can you help with this problem?
