How do I add languages to use for text objects?

Asked by Andy Burton

I have learned how to change the interface language, and how to do text editing- I'm not asking about these.

I need to be able to type a text object in Farsi (Persian). In the Text and Font window, all the fonts are in English, there is no place to add another language. Please help.

What do you mean with "there is no place to add another language"? You do not add languages there ;) This dialog is for choosing font for text and editing text.

Thanks for your clarifying question. My goal is to add text in Farsi (Persian) to a project. I can't find any way to type a text in Farsi in Inkscape. It would seem natural for the above mentioned dialog to allow you to choose other languages, not just fonts, but this is not available. Is there another way to add a language to Inkscape? It seems strange that I can change the interface language to Farsi, and can change my computer language to Farsi, but it still will not type in Farsi when I click text. Any help is much appreciated!

Which OS/platform and Inkscape version do you use?

Have you tried to change the preferences of X11 (X11 > Preferences > Input) to follow the system keyboard layout, and use the input method that can be selected from the 'Language & Text > Input sources' system preferences panel (or from the input menu in the menu bar)?

Alternatively - if that doesn't work: if you open 'Text > Text & Fonts' and switch to the 'Text' tab, you can select an input method from the context menu of the entry field (based on the GTK+/X11 context Inkscape is running in). I do not know whether these input methods are fully enabled or supported by the pre-built binary packages of Inkscape for Mac OS X - they are used on linux-based systems AFAIU.

You were right! I clicked on "follow system keyboard layout" and my problem was solved! Thank you for this simple solution! Now if I could just find a similar solution for Microsoft Office

Thank you
