save pdf and loosing filters

Asked by highpockets

When I save the drawing as a PDF, all artwork is converted except for the Inkscape-filtered text. How do I get the text to save as well?

Could you explain what 'Inkscape -filtered' text is? Or make an example as SVG available [1] so that we could test what is getting lost on export to PDF?

Also, which Inkscape version do you use, on which platform?

[1] use a service like Dropbox or the free image hosting service <http://imgh.us> which accepts and serves SVG. Launchpad's Answer section doesn't allow attachments.

Did you by chance turn of
 [x] Rasterize filter effects
in the 'Export PDF' options dialog, thus disabling the rendering for filter effects [1]?

Works for me with Inkscape 0.47 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i386) as long as I don't disable SVG filter effects in the export options (Inkscape 0.48 is out since last August by the way ;) ).

Or is it that text with the 'Black Outline' effect is omitted completely in the exported PDF file?

Well, I don't have an "Export PDF" choice in the drop-down File menu. Where is it?

I do have an option to uncheck "Rasterize Filter Effects" (wish we could attach screenshots of the menus here). I have tried saving with that option un/checked - the PDF then is white and shows no artwork saved.

If I downsize the drawing back to original size, the text shows up (w/all artwork), but without the Black Outline effect.

Seems to be 2 issues working here: i) the Black Outline doesn't get saved when saving to PDF format; ii) when scaling artwork (drawing) up several times original size, NOTHING gets saved to the PDF - just a white PDF page.

I am downloading 0.48 right now.

Well, now in 0.48 the Black Outline is saved when the drawing is at the original size. After scaling the drawing up 15x, just white space is saved in the PDF. I have to have the drawing at 15x size for a banner we're having made.

What I was referring to in my previous comment:
When you save a copy as "Portable Document Format (*.pdf)", the next dialog has several options for the PDF export, among them the option to rasterize filter effects (and set the dpi used for this rasterization) - as described in the releaser notes of Inkscape 0.47 I linked to in my previous comment.
If you disable 'Rasterize filter effect' the filtered objects will be rendered in the PDF file without the effect.

> i) the Black Outline doesn't get saved when saving to PDF format

Not confirmed in a quick test with a regular text object with Inkscape 0.47. There must be other factors involved which prevent the creation of the fallback image in the PDF file - possibly due to the size/complexity of your drawing:

Could be that you hit
Bug #494115 “Save as PDF with rasterized filter effects at high DPI looses random elements of figure”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/494115>

You might try a recent development build for Windows (not recommended for productive work) if interested in the attempted fix recently committed to the development branch (revision 10009):

Alternatively, can't you just give the text objects a black stroke instead of using the filter effect? Thus you could prevent additional rasterization which at huge sizes will possibly exceed the available memory or slow down the export as mentioned in the bug comment by the developer (theAdib)?

Can you help with this problem?
