no object to convert to path in the selection

Asked by Sujatha Harding

I am trying to create a welded word in inkscape. I have typed the word in outline mode (each letter separately) and rotated them slightly and moved them together. I got the instructions from a website called craftedge that was written in 2008. Anyway, the next step is to select all the letters in the word and then convert the object to path. However when I do that I get a message in the status bar at the bottom that says "no objects to convert to path in the selection". I think I am missing a step - one person wrote in and said to convert the object to pattern first. When I tried that I got rectangles instead of letters.

When I select the word before trying to convert it, the message in the status bar says "12 objects of type Group in Layer 1". I only have one layer in my document.

In Inkscape 0.47, the way text objects are converted to path(s) has changed:
- In earlier versions, each text object was converted to a single path (i.e. each of your separately typed letters would have been converted into path).
- Since 0.47, each text object gets converted into a group, within the group there is a separate path for each letter of the text object.

If you get the message "12 objects of type Group in Layer 1", you already applied the command 'Path > Object to Path' on the 12 text objects once, which resulted in 12 groups, and each group contains one path describing one letter. To get a single, big path describing all letters, now
1) select all twelve groups
2) use 'Object > Ungroup' (Ctrl+U)
3) keep the selection from the step 2 and use menu 'Path > Combine' (Ctrl+K)

If this doesn't help you to solve the issue, maybe you could provide the link to the tutorial?
