how to import files of adobe illustrator

Inkscape uses Uniconverter to do import and export, see http://sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor for information about supported type.

.ai files created with Illustrator up to version 9 should be able to be processed. Note that Adobe use a closed format (albeit based on postscript) and so errors should be expected.
