cropping in inkscape

Asked by John Anton

I would appreciate help to achieve a transparent background so that when I copy a logo word/image to various other applications the object does not cover the background of the target page. The logo is a word overlayed on a bounded, filled region. The word's letters are outlined regions too, with a different fill.

Right now the logo looks fine on a standard view in .svg format. However when pasted over a colored background, there appears to be a white rectangular bounding region that covers the background. How do I make what looks like "white fill" outside my word/image be transparent?

Thanks in advance for help.

John

Do you mean
a) pasting an exported bitmap file (PNG) in e.g. a raster image editor, or
b) pasting a copy from the clipboard (copied selection in Inkscape)?

For a) use 'File > Export bitmap…' to create a high-quality export of the SVG file with transparent background (of the page, drawing or selection, at adjustable dpi or bitmap size), do not save as "Cairo PNG".
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/File-Export.html#File-Export-PNG>

For b) see Bug #404826 “copy an object from inkscape to system clipboard doesn't keep transparency”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/404826>
Workaround: use 'Export Bitmap' and then insert the exported bitmap in other applications.

I can't say that "this solved my problem". But I can say that it saved me the time to look for a solution. FWIW, the answer in (a) does not work for me, since I want an image that can be proportionally resized without noticeable distortion.

I can also wonder here whether a notice is automatically sent to those affected persons when an upgrade includes a bug fix. <OK, you can LOL now.>
