Microsoft Visuall C++ Runtime Library Error

Asked by OmegaMan

I have a file that when I try to open it I get this error message with the header listed in the summary line 'this application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way'

It only happens to this particular file. I'm not entirely sure how to provide more information on exactly what happens when it tries to load, but if someone could give me some steps to follow it won't be a problem for me to post a file or info or whatever else is needed to help me see what's going wrong here, and if I can possibly recover the file.

Unfortunately the 'Answers' section of launchpad doesn't allow attachments.

If the file in question is an Inkscape SVG format type, you could make it available by uploading it to a free image hosting service like <http://imgh.us/> (accepts and serves SVG images) and post the link here, to allow others to investigate the issue.

The file itself is ok and opens without error or crash in Inkscape 0.47, 0.48 and 0.48+devel r9832 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (2GB RAM) - though memory consumption is high too, and causes the whole system to lag in response when switching applications. Most likely the file size and the structure of the SVG file are too big to be handled by Inkscape 0.47 on Windows (known issue).

I would recommend that you try opening the file with the current release version 0.48 (at least the file itself was last edited with Inkscape 0.47, so I assume you haven't updated to 0.48 yet): Bug #168914 in Inkscape: “Too many heap sections” (<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/168914>) was fixed or at least improved for the Windows port of Inkscape.

If Inkscape still fails to open the file, move the linked images to a different location on your disk so that Inkscape doesn't load them on opening - as an attempt to reduce the amount of memory needed to at least open the file.

Otherwise I can only recommend to watch the file size (13MB is huge for an SVG file without any embedded raster images): use clones instead of duplicates or copies when feasible, maybe keep a separate scratch file for sketches or variations of your designs, and use separate documents for overall variations of the drawing instead of keeping everything in one document.

Thank you,

it opened just fine when I upgraded to .48 and took some of the elements out of the file.

I thought I already was .48, but I forgot that I downloaded it and never installed. :)

I had the same issue with version 0.47. I just upgraded to 0.48 but the problem remains:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My file is quite large (~13MB) and has a few filled objects and layers. It is basically a collage of several svg images, so cloning or separated files are not an option. Inkscape get really slow when I open it and try to do anything. Though I think I have plenty of resources and don't know why this is happening. I am running Win 7 (64) with 12GB Ram, i7 CPU, 1GB Video.

Is there any way I can "fix" this so I can use Inkscape for the job??

Any help is much appreciated.

hmm weird. It stopped doing it when I upgraded to .48. It still crashes a bit, but atleast I can open up the files instead of losing them forever.

The only advice I can give you is to check out the file size, if it's gargantuan then that might be causing some of the problems. You can do things like use clones instead of duplicates and copies, and use linked jpg/png/gif files etc instead of imbeded ones to drop the kb down a bit.
