How do I save an image as a vector file, vs. a raster file?

even though there are many different graphic based format types, plain svg seems to be the best method for porting Inkscape files to other graphic editors.. Why there is an extensive list of formats is actually very misleading.

To export a bitmap use,
>File >Export Bitmap...
