i need to know how to group shapes together with the nodes tool

how to join all shapes tohether with the nodes tool and not the grouping tool

1. First you would have to ensure the 'shapes' are converted to paths first. >Path >Object to Path

2. Use the Edit path by Node tool (F2, n) and SHIFT+CLICK (multiple selection que) the paths (objects) you want to combine/union.

3. Once you have more than one path selected, use the Path Menu, >Path >Union or >Path >Combine options
