Italic Font convert EPS

Asked by John Babec

I created a text based logo using Arial Black font. Part of the text is normal and part of the text is in Italics.
It looks great on the screen but when I print or export to an EPS or PDF file, the text in Italics disappears.
Does this sound familiar and does anyone have any suggestions?I am using a currently downloaded version of Inkscape.
Thanks.

It does seem to happen for some fonts (only the stroke of the font is rendered in italic, not the fill):

Or did I misunderstand and the text completely disappears (instead of rendered as regular, without slant)?

No, the text stays visible, but it is displayed as being "normal" and not in italics. Another way of saying that is the "italics" font option doesn't transfer with the conversion. Thanks for letting me know it's a bug.

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r9802 on OS X 10.5.8 with Arial Black: the issue is that apparently the italic style rendered by Inkscape is 'fake' - on my system there is no font file for the italic style, and while 'Arial Black' can be rendered in italic on-canvas in Inkscape, the export to PDF doesn't use an italic style. Other applications don't even offer 'Arial Black' in italic.

See the comments in the referenced report:
Bug #200899 in Inkscape: “Font style ignored in eps/pdf output”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/200899>

«The case this happens for me is when a font doesn't actually include an italics/oblique variant. Inkscape will slant the straight type for preview, but it will not render it for print or PDF export.»
