Incomplete uninstall and file disassociation

Asked by Steve Sabin

I attempted to uninstall Inkscape and inkview using control panel "add/remove programs", but the directory containing the files still persists as well as associations to .ai files. Even though I uninstalled the program (or thought I did), the inkscape icon shows up for .ai files and when I double click the files, they open in inkscape.

I could find no separate uninstall.exe file in the directory.

You may want to review the software for better uninstall options, as the method through control panel apparently does not work. I repeated the process twice just to make sure, by re-downloading and re-installing the software, then removing it again.

Please advise proper steps to completely remove the program.

Regards,

Steve Sabin

There are known issues with the uninstaller of 0.46 and 0.47 which should have finally been fixed in 0.48, according to Bug #489022 “Windows Uninstaller Doesn't Work” and Bug #488747 “Windows installer problems 0.47”.

Inkscape executables still being present: as ~suv said, this is due to bug in the 0.46/0.47 uninstallers. I believe this should be fixed in 0.48 but if you upgraded it from an earlier release it may not work entirely. There's still some fixing to be done for 0.48.1.

To state more plainly what has happened, the uninstaller has done all its work - except actually deleting the files. So you can just delete the directory and it'll all be done.

As for the registration of .ai files: Inkscape doesn't register .ai files; that's something that you've done yourself. The Inkscape uninstaller won't ever do anything about that.

Can you help with this problem?
