where does inkscape store settings?

Asked by Robin Edwards

Since installing 0.48, I get an error which states "inkscape.exe - No Disk" "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \device\harddisk4\DR4"
I understand that it may be looking for something on some drive that isn't connected, so I have tried reinstalling and deleting my personal preferences. However, they can't all be deleted, as inkscape somehow knows which are my recently opened files. How does it know? I can't do a fully clean install unless it's like starting from scratch.

Depending on your OS, configuration is stored in:
    * linux/osx:
      ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml
    * Windows XP:
      C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Inkscape\preferences.xml
    * Windows Vista / 7:
      C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Inkscape\preferences.xml

Are those the same files you deleted?

yes I deleted those files, all my personal preferences for units and scrolling and suchlike were reset, but it somehow kept the recent files list.

Look for a file called '.recently-used.xbel' stored most likely in 'c:\users\<username>'.

possibly related:
Bug #210274 “In Windows the ".recently-used.xbel" file is stored in a wrong location.”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/210274>

(Caveat: I'm not using Windows myself, so I can't verify if the current Inkscape version stilled stores the file at the same location - if at all)

realise this thread is a bit dated. Deleting the .xbel file did not resolve the problem for me; version 0.48.4.r Win7 64 bit "non portable". Eventually tracked it down to a Win error message (see google search for similar problem in GIMP). I'd been using a USB card reader prior to launching Inkscape and had pulled the memory card rather than ejecting it. Three fixes to error message (all work): 1. disconnect the USB card reader 2 . put the memory card back in, 3. reboot.
