How NOT to embed images in Inkscape 0.48?

Asked by André Oliva

In Inkscape 0.47, the images that I pasted or made a bitmap copy where stored as separate files, that is, linked, instead of beeing embedded in the SVG document. In Inkscape 0.48, the bitmaps are embedded by default. That's great, because the folders are clean, free of "inkscape_pasted_image-...". But this has an inconvenient. I can not edit a bitmap with my external editor (gimp) if it's inside the document. I have to extract the pasted/copied image, and then edit it, and then re-embed it in the document, and this is very impractical. Is there a possibility of having an option in the Preferences' dialog for returning to the behavior of Inkscape 0.47? Or to have an script/extension in order to extract the image to edit it and then re-embed it when the edition has been completed?

Thank you.

At first - in 0.48 you receive message when you import or drag'n'drop bitmap, in this message box you could select embed or link image. Do you have seen that message?

And also - you could extract image by select Extensions ~> Images ~> Extract images... (you should select bitmap).

Cheers, Oleg

Yes, I've received the message, but that message is not shown when you paste an image or when you make a bitmap copy of a selection. And yes, I know that I can extract/embed images from the Extensions menu, but I think it's impractical... By this reason I would like to have an extension or maybe modify the behavior of the "Edit externally..." command so that an image that is embedded can be edited by automatically extracting it, opening gimp and then re-embed it.

But I'm now experimenting with simply cut/paste the image on Gimp and this seems to work fine for me. I remember that in earlier versions of Inkscape this didn't worked very well, but now it's fine. Thank you for your quick answer.

André.
