what format do I save my image in so that I can upload it to the web and link it to my signature in gmail?

Asked by Jonathan

I have a logo that I want to save in a format so that I can upload it to the web and then link it to my gmail signature. Gmail requires that the image have a web address so I'm thinking of posting it in Picasa or something. Only problem is that I can't figure out what format to save the logo image in so that it can actually be recognized by, say, picasa. I originally thought that saving it a a ,jpg would be fine, but it seems that Inkscape disagrees.

Any help, please?

The Save (As) option is really for vector file formats in Inkscape. You can save in PNG format by exporting as a bitmap (File > Export Bitmap...). Be sure to press the "Page" button to export the whole image, enter a filename (use Browse if it helps) then Export. If the PNG file isn't small enough, you can always convert it to JPG with the Image Viewer—open the image from the file browser, then choose File > Save As and give it a jpg extension.

Thanks Marc. I tried what you said but there was no .jpg option in the dropdown box when I went to Save As. I manually typed in .jpg at the end of the file name but that still didn't work.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

You should select File ~> Export bitmap. So you save your image in PNG
format (loseless bitmap format - the best for conversion of vector images).
Then you could convert PNG to any desired format by whole bunch of free
image tools. (e.g. GIMP)

Cheers.

I suspect you didn't have the PNG file opened in Image Viewer then, (and were still trying to use Inkscape's Save As instead,) because Image Viewer definitely has a JPEG option for Save As, and can be used for image conversion if you don't have GIMP installed. (GIMP is well worth having though.)
