copying images to paste onto backgrounds

Asked by Leonard

How do I copy single images out of a picture and paste it onto a background of another seamlessly? I am trying to make it so I can do it without having to follow the image all the way around with a free-form select to copy and paste. Is it doable with this program? Thanks

If you have vector images (e.g. SVG, not JPG, PNG, BMP, etc.) then you should be able to select each part of the picture just by clicking on it, though you may have to Ungroup elements first, or select them by using the XML editor window.

But if, as I suspect, the pictures you want to edit are photographs, then Inkscape really isn't the right tool for the job. You should use something like GIMP instead. Depending on the colours and contrast between the foreground and background elements, there are tools (such as the Magic Wand) that can be used to help speed up the process by selecting large areas quickly, but for *seamless* pasting, it's always going to be a case of manually masking out the original background.

Thank you for the response, This answers my question. Yes, you are right. It is a JPG so, I will try the GIMP program. Thanks again!
