What is the command of Merge of layers?

Asked by Lynda Duke

This is a great looking program - interface is easy to understand. But there is a command missing - very simple - Merge/UnMerge.

Too many steps for a single move is a program's drawback.

There really isn't a command to Merge Layers. The simplest thing to do is use

>File >Save As...

Choose Plain.svg

To test it close the file, ignore the Warning Pop-up Menu, this menu is to 'preserve' the inkscape only feature (Layers) you are trying to work around.

Open the file double click it, right click and choose "open". The layer's properties will not be part of a file saved as a plain.svg.

hope this helps.

Bug #170614 in Inkscape: “merge layers”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170614>

Alternative method (getting rid of the layer groups altogether):

1) unhide all layers
2) Edit > Select All in All Layers
3) Edit > Cut
4) Edit > Paste in Place

This pastes all objects into the current layer.

Grouping items from different layers appears to put them in the same layer too. In which case it would be
1. Select (all), eg Ctrl+Alt+a (doesn't work for me on KDE4, I have to use the Edit menu)
2. Group, Ctrl+g
3. Ungroup, Ctrl+Shift+g
