Making very large letters across a picture

I want to make a word very large across a picture but I can't figure out how to make the letters as large as I want.

Click on the text object and drag the arrow shaped handles (you should try with ctrl+drag and ctrl+shift+drag too). This will allow you to set the object size to any arbitrary value. If you look in the tool bar you can set the values in the spinbox controls (enter the size directly) and also click the padlock button to lock the height-width ratio.
