keeping image trimmed inside cd window

Asked by Edward Tomlin-Browne

Hi, I am a complete and utter novice with computers. I have recently compiled a debut album and I'm attempting to create a cd cover myself. Using other trial programs I was able to add images to a template and arrange them so that they didn't overlap the edges i.e they were automatically cropped when they hit the border. I was wondering how to do this in Inkscape? Many thanks

Try clip:
This proposal is not automatic but it will provide the desired results:
Draw your 'page', select the drawing for that page and group it (Ctrl-G).
Draw a rectangle or another figure on top of your drawing.
Select your page and the rectangle, go to Object/Clip.

Your drawing will be inside the boundaries of the rectangle.

The best way to do this is to use the canvas edge as your border.

Just go to file -> document properties, and tick the box "Border on top of drawing". This will let you see your working space, and where the pictures are within that.

Then when you want to export the "clipped" image, just go to file -> export bitmap, and make sure to select the "document" tab, and it will clip at the canvas edge.

The thing that sticks out about your message is that you mention "other trial programs", Inkscape is not a trial program, it is open source and free software, licensed under the GNU GPL2. It's a world away from trial software, freeware, shareware and standard proprietary shareware. Please don't confuse the two! Here is some more information about Free software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software
