Importing my own pre-made images

Asked by Steven Bunce

I am trying to import a logo i had made in the program GIMP. I had saved the black and white image of the logo in PNG files and in JPG files. I tried importing each image into INKSCAPE and it worked, But when i saved it as a SVG, and import it into the program SURE CUTS ALOT, that program would not read the file. Although if i make something (not import) in INKSCAPE then it will read the file. I want to Make my logo a SVG file so i can import it into SURE CUTS ALOT and then cut the logo out using my CRICUT cutter. Any suggestions to get the Program; SURE CUTS ALOT, to read the SVG files i make by important images into INKSCAPE? Am i saving it wrong?

Images created in the Gimp are bitmaps. For sure you can import them into inkscape, but as it is a bitmap, it will not give you any advantages (e.g. image will be blurry when enlarging).
I suppose your gimp file contains quite some pixels and it does not fit on the page size. Reduce the size of the imported figure so that it fits the page size. When saving, you could have a look to the "Document preferences" in the "File". Somewhere in that window you will find a feature to resize the page to the content.

BLACK PART:
>Path >Trace Bitmap

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Trace.html

If your image is of a higher quality, then just set like this

    >Single scan: creates a path (top section of MODE tab).

    xColor Quantization Colors: 2

Press OK this will give you ONE path filled with a black color.
WHITE PART:

http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Bucket.html

If you need the WHITE color in the SVG file for your cutter, Try using the Bucket tool (Shift+F8) with these
setting (tool controls bar - 3rd row from the top).

   >Fill by: Lightness >Threshold: lower # (try 0) >Grow/Shrink: 0.80 (set to px not pt)

You may want Set the Fill Color to Red so you can see the changes. Once you have the Red fills completed change them to White.

When working with this tool I have found that Zooming In impacts the quality of the Fills created.

Don't worry if the FILL of the white area Overlaps (Grow Setting) the Black path all you have to do is Lower (Home key, >Object >Lower to bottom) the White Fills below Black Path or Raise (End Key, >Object >Raise to Top) the B;ack Path.

DONE

If you are working with a LOW Quality (pixelation hell) Image then Tracing may not be of use within Inkscape.
