Inkscape does not do Goldenmean

Asked by Quat6

According to a web page I found, Inkscape .46 is supposed to be able to draw golden mean rectangles automatically by holding ctr and dragging the rectangle tool.

Instead holding ctr key does nothing to constrain its measurements.

The same is true of the spiral tool. I can tweak it to get very close to golden mean, but it does not conform to the golden mean spiral image I found on the web.

I find that inkscape .47 crashes about every hour on Win 7

I also find it very difficult to work with color, because there is no way to keep using colors I use. I need it to remember fonts too.

1a.
Make sure you Ctrl+Drag the mouse at a 45 degree angle for a square and ~30 degree angle for a Rectangle. Dragging at other angles will cause the square/rectangle to be drawn with sporadic/jumpy measurements. Check your mouse sensitivity in the windows control panel if this still does not work. I had to adjust my mouse when I first installed inkscape.
1b.
>Alternative method, create the square/rectangle, then switch to the 'Selector Tool' (F1 or Spacebar).
>Use the Tool Controls Bar (0.46 - 3rd tool bar from the top) and use the H: and W: number entries to adjust the size of the Square/Rectangul (imo, best method).

2.
The only function the Ctrl+Drag creates is for the "Outside Roll" node to be positioned at a 45 degree (15 degree steps) angle from the "Inner Roll" node. The Spiral's Tool Controls Bar is used to edit >Turns, >Divergence, >Inner Radius

3.
It is possible set a Tools creation defaults, using:
   >File >Inkscape Preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P) >Shapes (window panel on left) >Rectangle 'or' double-click the shape tool you want to change the setting to
    >Select the "Last used style" option.

I need it to remember fonts too.
4.
Working with 'fonts/text' is a little funky with Inkscape, but you can also use the >Inkscape preferences >Text and set the tool to use the *"Last used style"
*This only applies to "flowed" text in the versions I have used.

If you are new to Inkscape, I highly recommend you read up on the TEXT creation methods in Inkscape. It is one of the larger chapters in the Inkscape Manual.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for a thorough response. I will set the w, and h measurements to 3 and 5 and then make that a preference.

What I a really looking for with the colors is a storage bin of blocks of color. I will have to create that on a page and save it as an index. The trouble with the present color system is all its gradient options make it hard to see the pixel your selecting. I need a big easy to see block to choose one color over another. The triangle color wheel is the most useful, but still too small.

Thanks

Leigh

Try the Pallete Bar (at the bottom of the inkscape interface)

        >default pallete is named "Inkscape Default"
        >the color boxes start with a Red X over a White Background (no fill) AT THE OPPOSITE SIDE of the Pallette Bar to the RIGHT of the last color BOX is a very TINY arrow pointing to the LEFT.
         >Right or Left Click the arrow and a POP MENU should display
         >The TOP part of this menu is to setup the SIZE of the COLOR BOXES within the Pallete Bar
         >The bottom part is to select from a variety of palettes

>View >Swatch (Shift+Ctrl+W)

    > Has a similar TINY LEFT ARROW at the top right corner of the docked window.
   >Adds an option to LIST or GRID display the Color Boxes.

I would research BUG reports on this topic first, I created Custom Patterns and now it is corrupted and only shows one pattern :(.

patterns or palettes / color swatches in the custom palette?

Note: Inkscape uses the same data format for palettes as GIMP: you can create custom palettes in GIMP and drop the *.gpl file(s) into the 'palettes' directory in the Inkscape user profile (aka configuration folder). The palettes will show up in the list of available palettes after restarting Inkscape.
