Text kerning/tracking issue (Inkscape 0.47)

Hi, I just downloaded Inkscape 0.47 yesterday and I'm trying to kern and track text, using the suggested alt, shift, and control keys but apparently, nothing happens. Is there anything I'm doing wrong, am I missing something or is there something that's preventing it from happening?

The same thing (i.e. nothing) happened when I tried manual kerning. I got it to work by selecting the text then clicking:
Text > Convert to Text
from the menu.

I know it seems odd to have to convert to text when it already is text, but that's what got it working for me.

@Marc - that's because kerning doesn't work in 'Flowed Text', see the manual page

@LisaGrace - if kerning fails for regular text as well: which os are you using? Does the 'Alt' key work as expected for other keyboard shortcuts?
