My circle tool draws a rectangle shape with dotted lines around it. Also some other tools dont draw what they say. Is inkscape compatible with windows 7? I have checked the eye icon in the bottom and its not that. Thanks

Asked by oliver richards

When Im trying to use the tools on the left, for instance the circle and star tools they just draw a rectangle with dotted lines around them. The spiral tool is the only one that works properly. I have checked the eye icon in the bottom left and that is as it should be. Could it be that Im using windows seven? really could use some help!!! Thanks, Ollie

Just changed view to outline and I can see the circles etc......Is this what should happen or should I be in normal mode? Thanks

Draw a new circle and while it is still selected (the "rectangle with dotted lines around them" is the selection box) check the opacity value ('O:') in the status line below the canvas and make sure it is > 0.

You can also verify the fill and stroke attributes for the currently selected object in the 'Object > Fill & Stroke' dialog: the opacity has to be bigger than '0' else the object is invisible, the same applies to the 'A' transparency value of the fill color and - if the object has a colored outline - the stroke paint too.

With the default settings tools like the ellipse and rectangle tool create new objects with the last style used, so if you earlier changed fill/stroke color, opacity or transparency of a new object, the next will be drawn with the same style. The spiral tool however uses its own style (as do the pen and pencil tools).
