How do I trace around an image?

 I have transfered an image into inkscape and now need to trace round it enabling me to send the send trace line to back of image, please can you tell me how to do this? Many Thanks. Pat.

Trace it, then File->Export Bitmap. So and your original image and traced
lines will merge in one PNG. Hope I understand your thoughts correctly.

Pat, as Oleg says, trace the image using the trace bitmap tool in the paths menu. It sounds like you want to use the edge detect option. Once you have the trace done as you like, hit apply and the trace will show up as a path in your image. You can send it to the back of the image using the send-to-back or send-backwards z-depth options on the toolbar for the selection tool. Hope this helps.
