Placing a marker at 2nd point of line

Asked by Robert H. Biggadike

The PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW TO PUT AN ARROW AT POINT B (the 2nd end of the line as described below), all selections under both the Start Markers: and End Markers: pull down menus appear to put markers at point A.

I drew a line with Inkscape version 0.47 by

1. Selecting Pen from the Toolbox using the >> extended view if necessary.
2. Clicking point A then clicking point B to draw a line from A to B then clicking point A to terminate the line.as
described in the Inkscape Manual, Chapter 7, Creating Paths, The (Bezier Pen Tool in the bullet beginning with text,
"To create a path of straight lines" and in the bullet beginning with the text, "To close a path".
3. Edit the lines Stroke style by selecting the line then under the Menu Object select Fill and Stroke.
4. Next select Stroke style and choose the line width then select Dashes or the solid line.
5. Then choose Arrow2Lstart under the Start Markers drop down menu. This gives you an arrow pointed away from the
line at point A, the first point clicked. It also has the property unlike Arrow1Lstart that it rotates when the line
is rotated either using the rotation handle or by moving the nodes.

The PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS NOT CLEAR HOW TO PUT AN ARROW AT POINT B, all selections under both the Start Markers: and End Markers: pull down menus appear to put markers at point A.

I think you may have misunderstood the term "close the path", which means to create a loop where the end point is the same as the start point. It's not obvious that that's what you've created since the two parts occupy the same space, but if you use the node editing tool and drag the middle of the line sideways, I expect you'll find an obvious loop is formed.

If my theory is correct, then what you really need to know is how to terminate a line: double click the final point. So to create your arrow:
Select the pen tool
Click point A
Move to, and double-click, point B.

At this point you should have one, single, point-to-point line.
Now when you go to the stroke style property, Start Markers and End Markers should be placed at opposite ends of the line.

The problem is solved. Thank you.
You are correct, I was looking for a method to terminate a line. "Close the path" seemed the closest thing to it. The markers now work fine when I double click the final point.
