How do i separate the image from white background?

I have opened a bmp image in inkscape. Can I separate the image from the white background?

You can 'trace' your image for that (

But, if your image have too complicated content, I think better to use
raster editor (e.g. Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net) - try to use Magic Wand
tool, or select by color, choose white and remove it.
