hello,

in fact Inkscape render graphics as PNG. For doing so you could use
File-Export Bitmap.

cheers, Oleg

rename the files to '.svg' and re-open them with Inkscape.

Inkscape cannot save documents as JPEG images. If you added this suffix in the save dialog Inkscape with still store the file in the Inkscape SVG format and overwrite any existing JPEG file with the same name. This issue should have been fixed in Inkscape 0.47 - I wonder, do you still use Inkscape 0.46?

please see these related reports for further details if needed:
Bug #229788 “Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/229788>
Bug #541614 “Saved 2 files in .svg yesterday in Inkscape. Today they appear as .jpeg files instead.”:

Bug #429529 “Opened bitmap images get overwritten with svg on save without warning”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/429529>

Note: it is best to always save your documents in Inkscape's native format (Inkscape SVG) and only then export to PNG or save a copy in other formats as needed.
