measurments are not accurate

Asked by QuanellH

I am trying to design a template for a 4x6 piece of glass so the easiest way i figured was to make a 4x6 box and then create the templete to fit inside of it. So i made the box 4x6in and created the design inside the box and cut it out and it was smaller than the 4x6 piece of glass. can someone tell me what i am doing wrong i changed the measurement settings to inches but it is still not measuring correctly.

Go to File > Preferences > Interface. Below you'll see a ruler with a slider. Pick a physical ruler from your desktop, place it on display and start dragging slider in the dialog until ruler on display matches your real physical ruler.

The mystery here is, what is going on between drawing it on the screen and cutting it out?

I suspect that there's a printer of some sort involved, unless you're actually cutting your screen. If so, this is an issue of calibrating your printer driver. You might try just drawing a 4x6" rectangle, printing it out, and then measuring it carefully with a ruler. Make suitable percentage-wise adjustments to the scale that you print out your parts at.

Difference could be that Inkscape converts units from and to px [1] based on 90dpi (internally, hard-coded at the moment). If somewhere in the workflow between Inkscape and printer a default setting of 96dpi (or 72dpi) is assumed (e.g. when sending the file to the printer directly from the file manager or some third-party application), the resulting absolute values could differ.

[1] the values stored in the SVG source are always in px (SVG user units), except that some of the default templates have the page size itself stored in document units (mm, in, etc.)

Can you help with this problem?
