Attached backport of r10541 to the stable branch has been tested successfully with 0.48.x r9963 on OS X 10.7.5: if file preview is toggled off, the previews are no longer calculated.

Please review (the merge of r10541 into 0.48.x failed with a minor text conflict, fixed in attached patch).

Proposing to include the fix for 0.48.5.
