OK.
I performed test for clarity. System: Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, GNOME 2.28.1
Inkscape 0.47 release version:
Built-in pattern - app crashes.
Small bitmap pattern (38KB, 640x519) - app crashes.
Medium bitmap pattern (433KB, 1920x1200) - app crashes. # see attachment (try several movements of nodes)
Big bitmap pattern (3.2MB, 3264x2448) - app freezes.

In last bzr version everything work as expected.
