I can confirm the original problem is occurring in 0.48 on Mac OSX. I see no entry for the SVG Pixbuf importer in /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders which would seem to be the most likely culprit.
