The changes from r12395 merge cleanly into <lp:inkscape/0.48.x>, and fix the crash otherwise easily reproducible with current stable 0.48.4 (tested with 0.48.x r9961 on OS X 10.7.5).

@Martin - any special reason not to backport your fix to the stable branch?
