The official ATI drivers are offically unsupported as their Linux drivers are very subpar. If your card is supported by the open source ATI drivers I highly recommend you use them instead as they should work out of the box.

However, I'm not going to stop you from setting them up yourself. Just be aware that you'll likely bump into quite a few issues.
