What does the "load average" indicator mean?

Asked by Aaz on 2011-09-20

Dear developers,

Your indicator is a very handy one. It is fairly clear and straightforward. However, I can't figure out the meaning or a formula for the indicator "load average" via the user interface. Could you include some hint somewhere in the program?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Aaz,

load average refers to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Load_%28computing%29 or http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9001

So a load of 1 means 1 cpu running all the time, on a 4-core system everything below 4 means you have a cpu idling somewhere, everything above means there are processes waiting for cpu time.
