a couple of novice questions

Asked by Sadi Yumuşak

Thank you very much for these utilities.
I'll appreciate very much if you could let me know how I can figure out exactly what type of cooling fan I have on my DELL Latitude E4310. I couldn't see this info anywhere.
After installing this package I can see two new items in Psensor indicator:
Right Fan
CPU
(Before, I had Core0 and Core2 only - although I guess my CPU has 4 cores)
Does this mean that I have a Right Fan only?
And finally, how do I know the optimum configuration?
My laptop used to freeze now and then before (I guess because of overheating), but now it only freezes rarely when running on battery.
It seems I should do something more to stop it from freezing altogether.

I don't see any configuration files in my system (Ubuntu 14.04) as mentioned in the manuals. I tested first with the sample file, placing it at /etc/i8kmon.conf and tweaking the settings, but later I've noticed that everything seems to work just fine (even better) without one: it doesn't freeze even when running on battery now. So is it OK to use this utility without any such conf file?

i8kutils was not designed to discover the type of fan a Dell system has. Probably some hw detection utility can do that.

i8kutils was developed with the intention of turning on/turning off right and left fan of a Dell. And you can discover which fans exist using 'i8kfan'. Issue

    $ i8kfan 0 0

to turn the fans off. Then issue

    & i8kfan 2 -

to try to turn on the left fan. If you hear some sound, then the left fan exist. Repeat the steps with '$ i8kfan 0 0; i8kfan - 2' to discover if the right fan exist!

A configuration file is to set personalized values. But if you don't create one, a default set will be used.

So, ok, no problem of not having a config file!
