Upgrade-Problem (Intrepid => Jaunty)

Asked by Hochhaltinger

I upgraded two PCs from 8.10 to 9.04 using the direct way via internet and the 'Aktualisierungsverwaltung' (= upgrade manager?).
I did it by chosing always the 'default' choice in every step (just pressing [Enter] - [Enter] - [Enter]...) and after this upgrade BOTH PCs were not able to start their X server. in both cases (due to lack of enough Linux expertise) I had to make a totally new installation from scratch, therefor loosing all user settings (Yes, I know - only Klingons don't make backups... - but...)

Both PCs use a Nvidia graphic card (and an AMD CPU).
And on both PCs the earlier made upgrade (from 8.04 to 8.10) -- also made the same way and also taking only the 'default' choices -- did work fine.

Did anyone report similar problems?
Could it be caused by the Nvidia hardware?
And is there some alternative or workaround?

It will be nice if this problem would not occur in future Ubuntu versions.

With regards
