nothing happens when I start stitch panorama

I use a mac 10.10.5 Had no issues with Hugin for many years. I can get a preview image but when I click "stitch panorama" a white box comes up saying "stitching" at the top, but nothing actually happens. I am very familiar with this program so I dont know what has gone wrong.

I open Hugin, load images, view the preveiw image and then click "stitch panorama". The white box that comes up does not have any text in it. But there is no evidence that any stitching is happening. The PTO doc does appear in the original image folder of jpegs, but thats it.
